Pet peeve: I don't like, at all, that Phil usually ignores replies to his tweets, and that if he ever replies back to his fans, chances are it's going to be a random emoji.

the emojis are only after a video because the tweet says "rt for emojis" and he replies to fans after a majority of his proper tweets (the same as dan)
pretty much the only difference between them is that after a video dan will reply to fans but phil will do emojis and maybe one or two actual replies but they both interact with people on twitter very often compared to most other big youtubers

Of course, if you compare them both to other big youtubers, one may consider they interact a lot with their fans. But to compare Dan with Phil? I'm not so sure.

This is not an exhaustive research, exactly, but Phil replied to 1 person here:
4 people in the kangaroo sneeze tweet, and 3 people in the goodbye Australia tweet. No replies for the hurricane tweet. Moreover, I won't personally count as an interaction with fans replying with random emojis, but well.

Dan, on the other hand, also replied to 1 person in Phil's tweet, 14 people in today's tweet, 11 people in the Impossible Game 2 video tweet, and 8 people in the bath tweet.

In conclusion: Phil could learn a thing or two from Dan, if he wanted to.

I think Phil tweets more, atleast once a day so his replies are less often. Dan usually tweets once every 2-4 days so when he does he interacts more. Also Dans tweets give more to reply to whereas Phil's are more situational so there's not much to discuss. I love when he replies with a pun or some sass like the shoes size tweet

Overall I agree that Dan tries more with the fans to connect and be relatable whereas Phil appears more nonchalant. I don't think Phil doesn't care I think he just understands his brand isn't as riveting as it should be. He's pretty much limited to animal and food tweets- not much you can reply to ;) I also think it's a part of their dynamic because Dan is usually the one that attracts the audience while Phil becomes the one they discover through Dan. Dan says the bold things, drops the male attraction mentions and spons the heck out of videos with replies and even domestic phanservice. So Dan pulls and Phil makes it hard to turn back. I also find that Dan really enjoys the twitter humor because it matches his while Phil might feel a bit too old for the crowd

Phil doesn't personally reply to that many tweets, but he is much more likely than Dan to favorite a good many, especially phanart and pics.

Shit, I'm older than Phil, do I have to turn in my twitter card now? Though yeah I'll admit I think I am aged out of finding a dozen "shove [insert random object] into my vagina" responses to every single tweet funny, lmao. (Like, how do people even come up with those? Is that really what you want attention for?)

The "Who Is Better" fan-driven competition is one Dan vs Phil I wish would totally die. I know it never will, but I'm keeping hoping alive.

In a completely unrelated note, a situation absolutely applicable to the phandom (some of the users he mentions actually are from the phandom):

I get that it's your pet peeve so I have nothing against it. But most of Phil's tweets are not something you can really have a discussion. It's like he's just posting it for the lolz and #branding. He was just throwing the idea to the universe. and besides it's Dan who has #relatable branding
If the topic really interests him, he does reply a lot. Yes. I am biased because he replied to my tweet before. And as mentioned, he does favorite a lot of stuff.

YESS!! Phil is so supportive to the phanartists especially on tumblr and actually likes a lot o them.

Dan vs Phil comparisons do get tiring especially when people try to project Dans willingness to express sexuality/attraction with Phil's more subtle (and to some, nonexistent) approach. It's hard when they're always sitting side by side and starring in each other's videos to not be compared. On the other hand I feel it sometimes makes things harder for Phil because people expect him to be as open and engaging as Dan. Phil's faults become magnified when next to Dan because he's such a contrast to his counterpart. While Dan is loud, oversharing and willing to display emotion, Phil tends to be shy and less willing to express what's in his head. Some of that comes from past experience but I genuinely believe in real life, Phil tends to be the same. He is careful in what he says and takes time to consider something before making a remark.

What I don't understand and when people expect Phil to change because Dans a certain way. People are constantly saying Phil should be more open but I don't see why we should enforce something that someone's clearly not comfortable changing. Also Phil approaches things differently sharing less emotional vulnerability with the audience but makes up for it by shaing childhood stories, personal/childhood videos and even his search history and computer files :D If you're going to critique Phil or compare him do it as him the youtuber not him the person. At the end on the day he a a youtuber and his main job is to entertain the audience which I truly think he does. The sharing part is more of a selfish desire we have to understand the enigma that is Phil Lester and I think he's keeping the puzzle pieces close to hand.

Don't really mind Phil's normal Twitter interaction and it's cool that he likes a lot of stuff. But I personally really hate the emoji spams he does after uploading, it's just such a lazy way of interacting with your audience. Least you could do is form a few sentences to thank and reply to people imo. I just wanna share some thoughts about your new video mate, fuck off with the emoji that stopped being cute 2 years ago.

for the same reason other people want dan to change and be less 'loud' and less... everything, people like different things and there's nothing wrong with that

no one expects him to change anything, but im here for them as people not them as entertainers (used to be that way when i was younger but now instead of watching keeping up with the kardashians i keep up with dan and phil) so obviously i wish he would share more? because that's what I'm interested in? and that's not attacking him in any way and also isn't a crime

Mika there's a vast difference in the amount of people that jokingly want Dan to be less loud vs those who want Phil to change. Maybe you don't expect it but be seen many people waiting or Phil to open up just so he can be like Dan. You dont know how many times I've heard "why isn't Phil's ls like Dans?" "why is Phil not opinionated like Dan" etc. To me that's a naive request because they're two different people with different backgrounds and personalities and one shouldn't have to change themselves or go out of their way to mirror the other. The same goes for Dan as well.

I want Phil to be more open too because it's easier to connect with someone who you understand better. I would never ask him to change but instead let him decide what he want an doesn't want to share.

Maybe they just had a stern talk with the airline about giving out their info to anyone and therefore had a better airport experience. That's my hope at least.

^ Pretty much.

I'm not saying that now Phil has to act like Dan, at all. AmazingPhil, or Phil Lester, or whatever you prefer to name him here, is quiet, introverted, doesn't share much about his private life. And that's alright to me, even though I'd very much rather to know more about his OPINIONS and, you know, let us have a quick view of his brain. In the end, I watch his videos to be entertained, not to find my BFF.

There is something I've noticed from transcribing a Dan LS and a Phil LS, both from November 2012 and more or less of the same duration, an hour. In the end I managed to write 3 Word pages with Dan's, and not even a page with Phil's. Surely enough, this is not a definitive conclusion because, well, I've only examined two LS, but I've watched several from 2015 and 2016 and I bet I would end up in the same stage (and Phil's LS now being exactly 45-minutes long won't help).

One thing is to be privative, and another thing is him interacting with his fans essentially with rare replies that hardly reach 5 words + random emojis. And yes, he likes several phan arts, but so does Dan (both on Twitter and Tumblr): in this particular aspect, I'd dare to say they're equally appreciative of the phandom. Sigh.

I don't know much about 2012 because watching their younger versions isn't as interesting to me, but from recent liveshows my general impression is that while dan tens to waffle on about domestic issues, politics, opinions etc on his own and only looks at chat when he asks them specific questions, Phil seems to let the chat lead him. He reads the box a lot more, responds to chat comments a lot more, and his silent moments are spent reading the chat as it scrolls by looking for something interesting, unlike dan who has a planned list of topics that happened that week. I like that they have different styles. They are, in fact, different people.

My opinion on the tweets is that Dan has always said he shares things with the internet so we can all share in the humiliation and commiserate together, which explains why he responds to tweets more. To him it literally the same as texting his friends about something funny (I think/I hope). He's a bit more needy than Phil that way. (if that is all an act then damn he has it down lol)

I, too, wish that Phil would have more twitter conversations than just sending emojis to fans, but I can understand why he might not want to and also think Dan usually answers enough for the both of them

Also, kinda off topic, but re the furry/Rytlock from GW2 thing:

Re: Twitter game - both of them, I think, do really really well in using Twitter primarily as a self-marketing tool. They have both tweeted 24 times this month (robots? ), plus have retweeted one another a bunch of times. That's the majority of what their GA sees, most people who aren't in the few tens of thousands of people who make up the most dedicated parts of the phandom don't look at replies, which you can see based on how marginally less those replies are interacted with (liked/retweeted) compared to main tweets.

As far as the quality of the content, I suppose that's really subjective, but I will say that while I've seen some suggestions that Phil might be slacking behind Dan in the quality of that "content" (and wow, we're bored, aren't we? where is that gaming video again?), Phil's actually doing surprisingly well with his Twitter.

Both of their Twitter accounts are growing quite a bit this year, but Phil actually went from 2 million twitter followers to 3 in less than half a year (30. 1. 2016 2kk – 6. 8. 2016 3kk) whereas it took Dan almost an entire year (11. 6. 2015 2kk – 16. 6. 2016 3kk). The gap between how many each of them has is getting smaller, too, so it might even out in a year of so if everything continues to go as it is right now.

There's also a point to be made about their rebranding efforts and establishing themselves as a duo first, individual creators second. That translates onto twitter, too. We've seen that a bunch with shared statements (Pulse shooting, Australia arivals, you name it, from the tragedies to the daily informing, they're presenting a united front on twitter first, plus they tweet about one another with encreasing frequency) - so it only makes sense that as a duo, they'd split twitter tasks, too. Like Dan seems to be the one to reply more to people, and Phil likes more things (that Dan then often goes on to like in a few hours). That's just good teamwork. You do what you enjoy/are good at more.

As far as liveshows goes, that's a taste thing. I like both of theirs, I like that they're different, but I find myself enjoying Phil's more - they just calm me, comfort me, they're fucking *pleasant*, alright? Perfect Sunday evening activity. They just make me warm, whereas Dan's might give me more raw material, but often also feel just like hella lot of work - and plus, and this is just my weird thing, I kind of tend to appreciate being given things a lot more when they feel earned and unexpected, which is a Phil thing for sure - whereas I'm slowly getting to "well what else is new" as far as Dan lusting over what's-his-name goes, for example.
