droopy wrote:for cringe moments: It's easy for me to take things that are pretty much objectively cringe (such as tatinof) in stride, so even if I find something they do cringey, my reaction is to laugh it off and enjoy it for what it is (although I think my problem with tatinof is less about the cringe factor and more about how there's no plot or character arcs, but that's just me being grumpy and wanting a proper stage play).

I don't know if this is necessarily cringe, but something I'm not on the same page as a lot of the phandom is all the adoration for The Urge. The story itself is nbd; what grinds my gears is the high praise it receives. It's just... not that great of writing. And that's fine, it doesn't need to be, I still found it fun to read, but for some reason whenever I see a post lauding Dan as a "talented writer" just because he overused flowery adjectives and included some angst, I get unnecessarily bent out of shape. The dialogue's stilted, a lot of the sentence structure is awkward, and the subject matter is cliche. And now I feel bad for criticizing it, because it doesn't need to be criticized, it's Just For Fun, but if I see one more post unironically calling The Urge a "work of art," I will break out my red editor's pen and do a sentence-by-sentence markup of the whole thing, because I'm petty and extra.

...Anyway, my favorite deppy moment in the whole entire universe is this:
I totally forgot about that moment in the liveshow!!! Yes it is one of my faves too :D and now I'm just thinking about all the great radio show moments that I also forgot about
Also totally agree with you on The Urge but I think its because I saw Phil's first and it was so weird, in a good way, and something that I would expect Phil to write, that I expected Dan's to be about the same but it was just angst and an overuse of a thesaurus that I was just like...ok...

When I watched all of the old liveshows, I remember them having surprisingly a lot of good moments. I know that time period is supposed to be like... ~the dark days~, and yeah some of the stuff I found really hard to watch, but there was a lot of stuff I liked too. One really random thing that has stuck in my head was when Phil told a story of complaining to a pizza(?) restaurant because of a reason I can't remember, the manager or someone emailing him about it, and Phil had Dan call the guy for him. I seriously don't know why that moment has always stuck with me, but it did. I guess because at the time, I didn't really pay much attention to Deppy's personalities beside their personas in their main channel videos. I wasn't in very "deep" with Dan and Phil or the fandom. So that moment kind of humanized/added a bit of depth to Phil for me.

Also: Bubble Bobble. Okay, I don't know how to describe it, but this video still feels different than every other dnpg video to me. Mark of Oxin might be the closest I can think of. I know people use this adjective for like everything when it comes to them, but it just felt so... soft. I legitimately forgot it was supposed to be a Dan vs Phil video, it didn't have that feel at all. I don't think I actually laughed during it like I do with most of their videos, but it was so relaxing. I know we'll never truly see what they're like off-camera, and this could totally just be my imagination, but it felt kind of like that to me, at least more so than other gaming videos. Almost intimate? I'm weird, I don't know.

Speaking of dnpg, I actually think 2014 might have been my favorite era beside now. The first Bishi Bashi, the minecart level of Donkey Kong, Portal 2 blindfolded, Halo 3 (legit one of my favorite Deppy videos period and I never see anyone mention it) are all videos I regularly re-watch.

And I really don't think I need to mention it seeing as it's my icon, but ya'll. Phil's "this week's twitter question is" bloopers video. Cured my acne, paid off my debt, brought my goldfish back to life, etc. etc.
Okay, literally all of this. Small moments like the pizza one you mentioned are what I live for.

Also 100% agree with the description of the Bubble Bobble episode. Personally, I think it's because that game has pleasant memories for Phil especially (childhood and all that), but also both of them together, since I remember some old-old-old tweets where they mentioned beating the game together. I actually thought it was kind of funny in the DAPG video that they acted like they had never played it together before, but the video is still amazing so who cares.

I think it isn't that surprising, most people that engage in fandoms end up writing/reading fanfictions to compensate the lack of shipping content! Back in the 2012/2013 era, there were a lot of fanfictions about other youtubers, particularly Troyler/Zalfie/etc
i only know of them because my aunt bought my grandma Pentatonix's holiday CD and aggressively made everyone listen to it. i guess my assumptions about the fanbase based on that experience are wildly off, lol.

This is true, but I wouldn't say that most fans of one direction read fanfiction.

Turning to fanfiction writing for a moment:
there are approximately three times as many larry fanfictions as phanfictions on AO3.

Over half of all stories tagged in the one direction fandom involve larry. if we're going off fanfic production as a metric, one direction is approx. 5.3 times as popular to write about as phan. in actuality, i feel like it's more.

(full disclosure: wattpad confuses me; i probably did the search terms wrong. also I haven't attempted to account for fanfic exclusively posted to tumblr, livejournal, or another website.)
anyway what i'm (poorly) getting at is that there is huge amount of fanfic.

also, droopy, i agree with you 100% about The Urge. Part of me wonders if dan intentionally wrote it that way to be a troll.

About cringe deppy moments:
I think maybe that any social interactions where I can tell that they're not 100% comfortable just makes /me/ feel uncomfortable. Can't deal with meetup videos at all! I just feel so awkward for them. Collab with Connor Franta is also pretty cringeworthy (although I have to admit I've only seen it once and can't bring myself to rewatch).

Random thought but does anyone have any opinions about the super amazing project? It seems as if it never gets talked about even though there were like 36 (?) episodes.

I remember finding it mildly entertaining back in its day, but i tried rewatching a couple episodes recently and it's just all aged very poorly.

cringe moment: i agree with the whole dan's on stage persona thing, his voice when he's up there makes my skin crawl, i have so many other things but talking about them physically hurts me but one thing that i do hate is that i can talk about is the punk edits video i can't explain why, it just makes me cringe so much, same with pastel.

fave: when they're on the stairs in festive ditl and dan asks phil to pull his tail, and tbh the rest of festive ditl, i don't think they will ever top that video, like i know it is a 20 minute youtube video in which a 23 year old man naruto runs across a road but i will stand by the fact that it is the greatest piece of art to have ever been created ever and i would sell my soul for another non-holiday ditl (@ dan and phil if you ever need a human soul you know what to do)

Cringe: the hug at vidcon makes my skin crawl (phil looks so uncomfy, and I empathize with him. If my friend/(rumored lover) hugged me in front of a huge crowd while being recorded I'd want to die)

Fav moment: Phil making Dan hot chocolate (does this count as far a fav deppy moment if its mostly just Phil?) Idk, but I rewatch that so much. Its so cozy and nice.

I totally agree with this one considering it looks like a giant misunderstanding. I think when Phil held out his arms, Dan thought he trying to hug him-even though he wasn't. It was so awkward.
Side note- it reminds me of the Just Dance video when Dan wins and holds out his arms and looks like he is about to hug Phil and then just turns away.

when i first got into deppy (via carrie hope fletcher) i liked their chemistry so much that i watched all videos with both of them, including the sap. imo it doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves. part of that opinion may just be nostalgia and love for the radio show (which i consider the sap's spiritual successor) but i really do rewatch sap videos from time to time. i know they were filmed in 2011-2012 and some of content is immature and wouldn't fly today (e.g. dan's inappropriate jokes) but the chemistry is adorable (check out the bloopers at the end!) and what made me subscribe to them both. i especially have a soft spot for the episodes where they're in different countries and dan whinges constantly about how it's JUST NOT THE SAME.

maybe it's cringe for some but tbh i don't cringe that much at deppy, even at old vids which are products of their time and deppy's age. i tend to cringe more at the phandom than at deppy (sorry folks). with deppy u at least get the idea that they're not being completely serious and it's all in good fun - example: tatinof, which was a wonderful time to let my hair down and enjoy myself without worrying about being judged for liking deppy (tho there was a LOT of screaming). with the phandom u never know if ppl are being serious, joking or ironic

Yes I can totally see it being a misunderstanding...which just adds a whole new layer of cringe.

I'm jumping on this party.

Cringe moments: tbh, I have pretty bad secondhand embarrassment normally and, while I recognize the overacting and cringeworthy aspects of TATINOF, I don't find myself cringing at it at all. The first time I watched it, I was like, "Wow, Dan is working real hard to be natural and it's not working at all." Phil's "oh no" at Dan's existential crisis is really overdone though. I laugh about it whenever I say the phrase. I think the reason it's not cringey and just fun for me to watch (more than once) is that I'm a musical theatre fan and live for the cheesy dance numbers and over the top shows. BUT ANYWAY, I cringe when I watch the BONCAs moment when Phil wins for Best Collab and then calls Dan up and Dan says, "It would be really awkward if this was for you and Hazel." I kind of think that speech is a bit cringey and then later on when Phil calls Dan up for his solo award, Dan makes a comment about being Beyonce and Taylor and PJ being Kanye. That moment is a hard no for me. I THOUGHT OF ONE MORE. One of the first deppy videos I watched, way back in 2011:

Favorite moments: That said, I LOVE THE BONCAS AND ALL THE MOMENTS IT GAVE US. Phil winning and his speech, calling Dan up. Dan's "Phil Lester, everybody!" and "I think the universe would tear in two" Uh my heart. I also like PINOF 8 and 7. And this moment from the radio show. Dan looks so proud.

Agreed!!! Festive ditl is god tier Dan and Phil content, almost nothing will top it for me (although 'We're Moving Out' is also up there, as well as Japan ditl). Also agree with others who've pointed out the blindfolded cat face game as a fave. I personally live for tiny meaningless domestic liveshow anecdotes, e.g. awkward incidents they've had at the cinema, Dan's mum and Phil having the same dream, presumably loads more that I'm completely blanking on. A lot of the gamingmas videos stand out to me as great content as well, such as the Millionaire vid and Bubble Bobble - they just seemed to be in a really sweet mood.

I also love that moment from Louise's tatinof afterparty vlog where they look like a loved-up power couple. And those clips from Cat's Epcot Centre vlog where they're showing off the trinkets they bought for sushi night at the Dan and Phil house, and Dan says the coconut Pocky they bought is 'so Phil', and they wistfully ponder getting a koi pond :')

Regarding what I find cringe (other than the damn 'I feel special' moment I already mentioned)- I think I have this thing where I can look at gifs of photos from events and swoon over how adorable they are, but struggle to watch actual footage of them without cringing? Like, the boncas absolutely saved my life and cleared my skin etc, and I reblog gifsets of Phil's speech every time they appear on my tumblr dash, but I struggle to actually watch the video due to mild secondhand embarrassment. I think it has something to do with audience reactions, and gifs help me to forget that there's a screaming audience of rabid fans right there. I can never watch clips from them at conventions/shows for the same reason, idk why. Is anyone else like that?

Also haven't watched tatinof and likely never will as I have such bad secondhand embarrassment over it (not that I think it's bad or anything, I'm super proud of them/happy for them, it's just not for me personally).

Oh and I find pinof 6+7 to be a tad too screamy, which makes me cringe a bit

Edit: droopy it appears that way for me too, so def not just your browser! Also do not be ashamed, the early barbie movies were absolute classics haha

Cringe: Whenever something cringe happens I usually just fondly go "I hate this so much", shake my head and then laugh it of. But it's sad that the only recorded hug we have is so painful to watch and I really hate how they never hold hands or link arms in the three-legged DDR challenge. Even mortal enemies would do that to keep balance and it just pains me that they feel that they can't.

Fave moment: When they pull a cracker and Dan gets a 8 cm ruler and Phil asks "What are you gonna measure?" (twice) and Dan goes "shh".
I also have a weird love for the moment when they discover they need all the skips in Impossible Quiz, the whole how pained Dan looks and how he reacts afterwards with Phil being a more calm presence. And the "Welcome to Phil Games."

[Edit: I love and adore both the cat whiskers and BONCAS. And the monster pop baking video is so rewatchable. Post baking universe indeed. ]

(Crawling back out of lurkerdom to join in on this discussion as I find it so interesting!)

obscureDnPreference I'm right there with you on the Stalker Prank Call video, it's one of the few Dan videos I can't watch anymore. Soooo much secondhand embarrassment. As for other cringey moments, those mainly end up being videos I've now overplayed like the Photo Booth Challenge and PINOF 7. There are moments from both those videos that I adore though, like when Dan "fell off the moon" and the trust fall.

As for favorite moments, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the tackle from PINOF 1, or much of anything from 2009! (Well, I can see how a lot of it could be cringey but there were definitely some adorable moments) I feel like it was pretty much Phil's way of saying how excited he was to have Dan there with him even a whole day after they they first met. I really love the softer moments too, like in the London DITL where they're sitting at home and reminiscing about WordArt and Dan gives Phil an ultra-soft smile that makes my heart melt every time. (It's at 13:13 btw) Also the little clip from the making of TABINOF where Phil's filming Dan on Dan's bed and Dan's making those weird noises--I think he's testing out the reverberations of the piano or something? I just adore their soft natural voices in that, it makes my little heart sing. And of course the BONCAs and the Festive and Japan DITLs are absolute classics, as well as much of The Mark of Oxin, especially Dan's constant praise of Phil and his young brain.

Cringe Moments: so happy to know I'm not the only one find dnp's performance on stage so cringe. Especially when dan slightly squats and akimbo, I feel really uncomfortable to watch him.
And I also find dan saying phil is adorable or like a flower very cringy. I know I lot of people like this but when I see him saying things like this I have to pause the video to recover from the pain.
I need to hide this one because it makes me physically uncomfortable
when I saw dan fuck the box I almost jumped out of the window.
Favorite Moments:I think the video I watched most is HongKong Pokemon Go. Mainly because Im so happy to see them in the same country as me. I still can't believe phil just let dan use his phone to film the video. I mean I can't even allow my best friend use my phone for one minute without my supervision. I also love the part dan bought medicine for phil and made phil say he like it, because it is such a domestic moment

Cringe Moments: gotta agree with both obscureDnPreference & outerspacehowlters with dans stalker prank call video being the cringiest thing dans ever put out. I can't watch it at all. Runner up has got to be one clip from the face swap video (aka the trumpstump line, I LITERALLY ALMOST THREW MY PHONE ACROSS THE ROOM BECAUSE OF THAT. NO THANKS DAN GOODBYE). And maybe any of the dragon city spons as those are always so painful to watch. Oh! And dan singing "daddy wins" at the end of who's your daddy... it's a no from me on all those.

Favorite Moments: I have far too many to pick a favorite but I'll go with Phil at the boncas just to pick a favorite of all time. So many good radio show moments too!

Right?? I watched it recently and was just a cringe fest all the way through. I was so much more awkward as a 16 year old girl back in 2011 when I first watched it, so I can't believe I got through it that time, let alone watched more DINOF videos.

I also cringe at this exchange:

To change the theme, a fave moment is when Phil gets Danger Men at Work right at DAPGOOSE LA, Dan looks sooo proud.

this just made me think of one of louie's vlogs from vidcon where they're all at a party and he pans around behind and dnp are just standing there shoulder to shoulder. and then dan starts to say something and he's clearly been drinking. it's a cringe moment because they've expressed annoyance with people filming during those parties and i get that. but it's also a fave because it's just so /human/. plus dnp surrounded by all these people they rarely get to see and here they are shoulder to shoulder behind everyone lol.
