Yeah this stood up to me too. I know he is very self conscious about his stuff, so to me this is him acknowledging how he is no longer in his "golden era". Maybe it's me being pessimistic, and i agree with you that this is probs the biggest time for him, but who is danisnotonfire as a youtuber anymore? He's not as popular anymore and as he said he barely uploads anymore. Danisnotonfire is not as relevant as he once was, and his success with the book and other shit it's mostly because of the phandom.

I haven't seen the show but I've read all the spoilers and some parts are hella shipbaity if you ask me, especially the whole fanfiction segment.

Also, little things here and there that would be more fanservice than shipbait if it weren't for the big picture. For example: the 50 shades of Phan in the make up video or the dancing bit in the Brits last year.

OK so are they supposed to completely ignore the ship? Isn't that what everyone gets pissed at them for attempting in 2012? They can't ignore it, but they also can't acknowledge it, because one is homophobic and one is baiting apparently. I just don't understand where the line is because it's constantly on the move.

Friends (kind-of-)hosting an awards show could jokingly 'get caught' dancing in that context (it's a silly fun joke), but it's not cool for them to do it because other people tend to believe they're more than friends, and therefore doing things that maybe couples could also do crosses some intangible line? I maybe get the weirdness with the fan-fiction in the show, but it seems more like acknowledging something their fans do and having fun with it in the role of their online personas (and even being meta with a 'this is kind of weird' vibe as I understand it, having not actually seen the show). They should just ignore it all? And never touch each other, or make eye contact, lest somebody out there thinks they're getting the bait out?

I find it so frustrating, what specifically are they supposed to do? What are these rigid definitions and codes of conduct for same-sex friendship that people need to adhere to to be unproblematic at all times? idgi

Actually you're totally right, and I just remembered there's that time in Bishi Bashi where Phil says 'I bishi bashi alone quite a lot' and Dan bursts out laughing, so they do go for wanking jokes on the odd occasion actually.

I think what's got a lot of us fucked up is how rare anything which could even be interpreted as a denial (even menial references in a rap) are these days. They're really few and far between. A year ago this wouldn't have phased us.

But missemma is totally right, all this is somewhat derailing a celebration of a frankly fantastic dinof vid and there's plenty more to hash out than what he said about phan but I'm sure we'll get onto that in the months-long gap between now and the next dinof vid.

I didn't see a phan denial. I saw Dan saying he's shipped with his friend. Which is an obvious fact. You'd have to kinda reach to say that he was denying phan by calling it kawaii? He's calling phan cute? I don't see how this is a phan denial. I really don't. And at the end when he was talking about masturbating, that could be taken as he's single, but as a lot of people have pointed out you can still masturbate when you're in a relationship, I think if anything he was kinda implying that all he does is masturbate and eat pizza which in turn he's implying is lame...so he's sort of calling masturbating lame which is not cool but I feel like it's a common joke. I've seen it lots of times before.

Anyway, I don't see a phan denial. Period.

Not a hater but not a DINOF lover, he can't rap for sure, he can recite a poetry fast but the boy has no rhythm. He delivered everything his viewers expected, its like he is stealing your bingo cards. Its no as bad as most of his recent videos, pretty good in comparison. I mean, the sexuality thing is something else and he chose to drop that mega hint hint on us.....but we know they absolutely want privacy when it comes to relationships. After everything discussed, it was really noteable that he didn't mention 'existential crisis.' He is growing up and changing his brand. The thing is they, in my opinion, don't just 'aknowledge' the shipping, they play it up, and that's what I don't like. You are right, it's a fine line, but all the examples I listed are things that didn't result from a natural interaction between them but were planned beforehand, like the dancing bit at the brits. And anyway the TATINOF segment would be the biggest issue for me, it's where I definitely think they play it up because it's what the fans want.

I can see you have a very different view of the whole situation and that's fine, if everyone thought the same way life wouldn't be fun.

I'm a new poster but I thought I'd comment on Dan's newest video-

I think it's been mentioned here before but this wasn't a roast on Dan Howell- this was a roast on danisnotonfire and with that being said, especially considering his disclaimer and the fact that dinof is a persona, I don't really see how this is any different than his tumblr tag videos or his meme video. He did mention serious topics but he didn't actually say anything about.

He didn't deny or confirm phan and I didn't think he was going to. He said himself that he wanted Phil to wink in that scene so I just saw it as a tongue in cheek reference- not bashing fans (or phans) but more like including them in the joke. right now Phan is Dan and Phil's bread and butter- they still have Australia and another book to get through before they kill their ship.

It was fun and it was funny but just like other roasts it was just an exaggeration of things that people mock danisnotonfire for and not a statement on his identity or sexuality.

But also i'm not as thrilled as most of you are? It just seemed rushed throughout the video. I get that's what he was going for, but i would have prefered if he'd done a little more on each topic to dig a little deeper. I don't even know what exactly i'm trying to say, maybe i shouldn't have read IDB's opinions before watching, so my expectations were too high.

And i'm also happy he commented on his sexuality. To me "leave me alone with your boxes and labels!" is just as much a statement as a "coming out". Of course, there wasn't anything wrong with his ambiguity, nobody HAS TO explain their sexuality, but it's nice nevertheless

Danisnotonfire is not this complete unrelated entity, it is very much the real Dan but just super over the top and caricatured in a form of self preservation.

I actually liked that video after being unable to watch it for like 20 min. I think what I really loved about it is that he roasted himself but also very much the phandom (with the tumblr part and the society box part and the shipping part) and youtube community too in the end.

I'm impressed by how much he chose to acknowledge. I'm even more impressed at how he managed to do it all and, to quote him, keep it all so blurry. The fact that he did a roast video pretty much as in line with (if less actually informative than) most other youtubers and yet we're all floored really highlights how little of his personal life/opinions we are privy to. He hints, he alludes, he obliquely references but rarely actually says things directly. And he didn't actually say too much directly here either - it's all ambiguous and slapped with a "joking" label. But it still feels like he was revealing and so it gets a huge response from the fans who crave that from him.

It's the lab rats thing all over again; we're so used to getting so much less from them than most other youtubers give that even having Dan acknowledge things literally everyone in phandom talks about feels like a revelation.

I thought it was great! Well planned, well-written, well executed. Loved the Phil photo, and found myself cheering internally at the "wtf is your sexuality" , mostly because I admire his skill at how well he has maintained ambiguity while simultaneously being open.

How he approached the 'shipping' thing in this doesn't sway me one way or another on the subject of Phan being real or not. The reality of what they actually are has nothing to do with the fact that a huge portion of his/their fanbase is fixated on their private relationship, whatever it is. They're shipped, they know it, we know it. Saying that's what's getting him views and being another white guy shipped with his friend isn't a comment on the truth of whether they're really together or not. I don't see any denial or confirmation there, just a statement of what other people focus on with their relationship. If phanti blogs want to mangle that into their own narrative, go nuts.

Okay, I went into that terrified and my mom watched it with me the first time I watched it and I made her press play because I was already cringing.

And I loved it! That was great! I mean, the rap was mostly terrible(I kind of like the fast part) but I hate rap in general so I wasn't expecting much on that front...

The roasting was great. I laughed out loud several times.

I loved all of it and I'm not sure I can pick any favorite parts. I loved the fast paced list part a lot, though.
