I also think it's likely that it says 'Say sorry to Phil about the card' or something along these lines. Honestly it warms my heart, as at first I was a bit sad that Dan's family didn't adress Phil at all.

Re: identity. I never say anything when this topic comes up because I'm really uneducated on that regard (I do enjoy reading everyone's thoughts because I take it as a chance to learn more myself). However, I would like to say that we live in a little bubble here (and on tumblr), but the rest of the world walks at a much slower pace when it comes to these issues. I live in a quite progressive area and before getting into Dan and Phil and discovering tumblr I didn't even know that pronouns other than 'she' or 'he' were a thing (I did know about transexuality, but had a very shallow and probably stereotypical view of it). Even nowadays, identity is not in the secondary school science curriculum at all (at least in Spain), and most teachers don't even pay much attention to sexuality either. I guess my point is that being inclusive and coherent about identity is much more difficult than it may seem from this corner of the internet, and that I do value that Dan and Phil (and some other youtubers) are making a conscious effort to change the way they think and talk about that topic, even if it's just baby steps.

Nah someone speculated that the Howell's could've got Phil a separate card we couldn't see, but there's nothing to back that up. The only card we can see/are talking about is the Northerners one. It's confusing because we used to think it was a DIFFERENT card, but then realized it was for sure the Northerners one because of the way the writing lined up or something.

I'm so impressed with your sherlocking and that card + the apology together make so much sense and it's adorable.
It also shows how Dan's parents see him and Phil naturally as being together (literally or figuratively) more than just as friends or roomates (at least that's how it seems to me, acknowledging some other person in your son's christmas card seems like it's somebody important in their life).
On the topic of it not being addressed to them both - in my experience it depends a lot on the family how they handle this kind of stuff. This also plays into the whole spending xmas together or not discussion imo. There are some where the kids + partners are totally seen as a unit after being together for a while, while others always still see the individual person and pick gifts or address them accordingly. I remember that time when all the grandkids of our family made a calender with pictures of us to gift to my grandma, and literally everybody who was in a relationship naturally choose a picture of themselves with their bf/gf while my siblings and me were really irritated about that because we all hadn't even thought of including partners.
And without knowing much about Dan's family they seem to be more of the individualistic, loose ties kind with less traditional family values.

I wasn't educated on these topics before reading stuff on tumblr (where also the tone changed a lot over the last 5 years or so) although I've been in leftist/activist circles for ages. I guess most of my political friends dont know non-binary genders are a thing, and most of "regular" friends and family don't even have a clear grip on what being trans means.

Same goes for traditional celebrities.
You can be glad if hollywood stars don't say outright homophobic or racist stuff, but youtube and internet people are being held to a different standard imo. Especially Dan, because he's such a self-proclaimed tumblr person and being in fandoms and stuff is one of the things that made him relatable and thus successful in the first place.
Anyway it makes me happy to see how far he, and the community as a whole have come and if there are some slip ups it should be excusable because they are both clearly making an effort to be inclusive and respectful.

@dezza Your post was amazing, cultural and historical context is fascinating and sometimes it isn't taken enough into consideration. I didn't say anything about this topic because I'm not educated enough, and as annetamiau, I live in a spanish speaker country where the topic of identity is hardly touched irl :') So I appreciate the effort they guys are doing, I understand it's kinda difficult to change the way they were used to speak. I'm learning along with them.

I haven't been keeping up with the thread so far, so I've not got much to contribute I'm afraid, but I popped in to say happy new year everyone! Here's to another year of discussing/micro-analysing D&P. (Hoping they make a new years video or something)

Wow I was avoiding the forum like a plague for a couple days over the queerbaiting discussion and phan is real blah blah but Im glad oqua saved it with this lovely find!! Am I the only one feeling mushy inside that they made a joke on Phil's expense Also I love Dans parents!! (sorry ickle) The whole card was so witty but also so sentimental .

Re: identity I live in California where everyone is supposed to be liberal yet my classmates who are nb/trans are almost never referred to consistently by my professors. It's something that I feel people genuinely do struggle with. And hearing all your stories had me nodding along vigorously. At first when I read the post I was a bit defensive, not at phil, but at the idea that if you haven't corrected your pronouns you haven't internalized the concept. It's something that I, even after being surrounded with it and experiencing and practicing on a daily basis, sometimes mess up. But then I thought about it more and realized that you only instantly internalize the idea if you experience it. For those who don't personally experience it, its a process. It's because we are wired in a specific way and even though we're empathetic and open-minded to change- actually processing and changing the way we think and believe takes much longer than a couple of years (for some). But I think as many have said we learn, and we apologize and correct ourselves when we mess up. I hope that at some point we see Phil stumble and apologize and revert back to the correct pronoun. But I'm also glad that as alittledizzy pointed out he had been referring to toto as they/them (I also didn't know toto was nb till i read it here ) so I hope he continues this is when he messes up, corrects himself.

Also want to say happy new year to the IDB family, it was a pleasure reading your long posts while squinting on my phone and laughing along to all your hilarious theories

i have nothing to add, but #cardgate warmed my cold heart a bit and i love you all for figuring it out literally overnight haha i hope you all had a nice christmas btw and have a good new year! it's been a fun year lurking/occasionally posting with you guys and i'm ready for more!

As there is often speculation about Dan relationship with his family just want to say that if the IDB theory on cardgate is correct then to me that says something positive about their relationship as it means his family are comfortable enough with Phil (his flat mate/BFF) to buy Christmas cards with jokes aimed at his expense. It suggests there is at least a level of banter there between them and Phil and as he has never lived locally to them they'd only really spend any real time with him when visiting with Dan (or if Dan bought Phil on a visit to them).

I mean I am assuming the front of the card (if it was the Northern joke) was for Phil's benefit as I would think that kind of joke is only really viewed as funny if it's aimed at a particular northerner or sent to somebody who is really a regional class snob (which due to his attachment to Phil/choice to move up North for Uni we can assume Dan is not).

It's so nice to have a satisfying ending to a -gate! Thank you everyone who contributed to #cardgate. What a read to end the year.

That being said, 2016 is coming to end (at last) and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone here on IDB for making it a laugh even at the toughest of times. Since moving onto this site, Dan and Phil have done so damn much and while I'm totally proud of them and all, I gotta say being a part of this community was the highlight. I mean where the hell else was I supposed to turn during The Drought of '16™?

We've chatted our way through a US tour, an Australian tour, a book, a song, a European tour, a movie, a documentary, Gamingmas, and a ton of videos, -gates, and serious discussions and it has all been a BLAST. I appreciate y'all more than you know and hope 2017 only brings us more fun. So, here's to the new year!!
