Dan & Phil Part 22: #rubberupfordan

If they thought, 'Oh this would be a nice thing to tweet, I bet our followers would like that,' then isn't that a good thing?
I like fanservice. If it's fanservice I know I, as a fan, am going to like it.
Why would it upset me to think want to share something that they think their audience will enjoy?
If they don't share anything they get people complaining over a content drought and if they do share things we're all going to attack them for 'fanservice'? We're going to attack them for sharing things with us they think we'll like?

Well, howdy IDB!
I haven't had anything of value to contribute and had a lot on my plate, so dropping by to say I loved your reactions to the new GO video! I had kind of lost interest in them for the last couple of months or so but damn if those type of videos don't draw everyone back in! The DITL videos (which those so resemble) are always so great and they make me feel mushy inside, aw
And then I get the tiiiiniest bit sad that it's so hard to find such a close friend (or whatever else they might be by now ), a person that you'd be willing to spend SUCH amount of time with, seemingly only growing closer to as the relationship evolves, etc. Even though we know little about their private lives (and they surely have their own hardships), it's clear that their connection runs deep and it's inspiring.
I said it made me full of feels okay
and I think I've already said that before but they once again struck with the adorbable so..

Bless you. Like, really, I love me some good quality fanservice. Serve me up. Yup yup. Not to mention, if your job is literally selling yourself, making your fans happy is just like, your job, isn't it? So sharing things you know they enjoy, to me, just reads as doing your job well. There isn't a narrative bottom line you're compromising as is the case with poorly executed fanservice in a TV show.bluewho wrote:back bear

The idea of things being simply too awesome to be true & so we've got to find a way to make them seem disgenuine might be an issue coming up more and more as D&P continue their sunset-lit journey of awesome awesomeness, I feel like.

After seeing all of the responses I think my issue is that I don't really enjoy this fansevice. I think that's what makes it stick out to me as fan service. I just feel like I've seen the same selfie of Dan and Phil 3 times during the tour and I really don't care. Maybe it's the retired Phan shipper in me talking but I'd like to see something different, like maybe some of the crew

i'm finding all of your analysis of the pics really interesting because i would have never considered how much they might think about what intent is associated with posting to social media. i honestly thought that they just posted whatever pics to social media because they were out and about having fun and took a pic and threw it up because why not? i'm honestly not sure if they even considered the pics as fanservice because it's got to be so exhausting trying to market yourself 24/7 (and they're already doing that with the tours and the m&g anyway) so to me the pics are just them having fun and not really thinking twice about posting a pic to instagram or twitter. i think calling it fanservice implies that there's an actual intent behind posting the pics, which i'm not sure exists. that said, i agree that they probably cut the crew out of their pics to help preserve everyone's privacy.

Ngl, I'm here for the fanservice, but also for everything else they want to share too. Loved the Pokemon Go video, will watch again with the wonderful list of timestamps. Nice just to see them wandering around Hyde Park, it's a beautiful place.
I liked Dan's ISG and the YTR too, though for once I enjoyed watching everyone else in it just as much as Deps (I always try not to be blinkered by them anyway, but they didn't have tons to say this time or say it with a ton of energy either, though we know why that was). I was glad to hear Dan address Asexuality and also condoms
About the radio show - in the Creative Process panel at Summer in the City on Sunday, Jack said about creativity being stifled, almost in passing this is all the info I have to share, "that's why everyone quit" referring to the Internet Takeover. So that kinda answers and raises questions, I guess - Dan and Phil might still do something with BBC R1 as they were said to still be in the family, but perhaps not in the same format and also without other YouTubers taking turns alongside them

Whaaat. Were you there or is there a video? Because I have to call bullshit (on Jack, not you!). In a liveshow Emma commented on the show ending and didn't say anything about having a choice in the matter, she even said she hoped she (and Luke lol) would be back in some form in the future but it was out of her hands. I think Jack's just trying to give a better spin to being let go. We knew the other YTers were out (speculation was they didn't get as many listeners/viewers as the monthly D&P show) but lol at them deciding that for themselves. Sure Jan. I mean Jack.flarequake wrote: About the radio show - in the Creative Process panel at Summer in the City on Sunday, Jack said about creativity being stifled, almost in passing this is all the info I have to share, "that's why everyone quit" referring to the Internet Takeover. (But FYI it was already confirmed Internet Takeover is done completely. If D&P do come back, it won't be to that).
Thanks and have a great day! Oil me
Personally, I'd say no, fanservice is not "genuine". The definition of fanservice (according to wikipedia) is "material in a work of fiction or in a fictional series which is intentionally added to please the audience." Obviously, aren't fictional, but the point still stands. To me, fanservice can't be genuine/sincere because it's something done to intentionally please an audience (But, to everything else you said!!)bluewho wrote:Can't fanservice be genuine? Any photo they post up is effectively #phanservice, regardless if it's obviously staged or maybe just incidental one-off - and that's all good stuff. Devotees will still lap it up and dissect it for both overt and hidden meanings for hours (or days, months, or years after.) And let's face it - if they include anybody that is related to the tour (or D&P in general,) diehard Phans will relentlessly cyberstalk them to get their details, and some might even physically stalk them - which is bad. Boundaries people! [/rant]
Their apparent slight increase in postings probably reflects more "free" time available on the Aus tour segment. *Maybe* they were influenced by the whinings of some fans who feel they are somehow neglecting loyal fans by not concentrating their efforts on YouTube content, but they seem to be working to develop their long-term business viability / relevance because they will age-out of their YouTube genre's demographic. Hopefully their management is on board with broadening their appeal, rather than using their current popularity (and then ditching them for the Next Big Thing.) [/rant#2]

Anyway, take note Deppy. I like that Felix states clearly "Just because i have an audience doesn't mean i have to be okay with bad behaviors". When thinking of it in a bigger picture, i think this sentence applies to lots of other things as well. Deppy have a large and very dedicated fanbase, surely they catch up with what's going on in the Phandom right? The Phandom is bigger than ever (and still expanding), but it has its consequences, with the greatest of all (in my opinion) is some of the new fans idolizing Deppy and being hateful towards one another if they don't have the same opinions as them.
To conclude i just wish Deppy acknowledged and addressed more the bad behaviors from the Phandom like Felix.

What I find most interesting about this whole fan service debacle is that, this only seems to be mentioned when they post photos together. Not many mentioned it when Dan posted the photo of him with curly hair or Phils photo this morning. Why does it seem to only deemed fan service if they do things together and want to share it when they do it individually as well? I find Dan's curly hair photo way more fan servicey since, well, he gave the fans what they were all screaming about and wanting for awhile, him to keep his curly hair for a few days and for a meet and greet. He gave them what they wanted for a few days then went back to normal. Maybe it was also him being actually liking it, but it was still more fan servicey, well to me at least.
Dan and Phil do fan service from time to time, of course. Like you've all said, it's their job to do and post things their fans will like. Fan service is good sometimes, does it really well when needed, tatinof comes to mind the most with it. Some of the best light hearted fan service I've seen. I'm pretty sure PINOF and a few other things they do could be deemed positive fan service as well and that's fine. But that doesn't mean every single thing they do together or post is because they think it'll please the fans.
To me this whole thing is like having thousands of followers on ig or Twitter and you decide you want to share a photo of you and your friend. You're posting it because you wanna share the moment that you had with your friend, not really caring about the number of people who are gonna like it and see it. I get they are famous and have millions of followers, but that doesn't mean they have a motive behind every single thing on social media. Maybe they wanna share it just because they found the moment funny or the photo?
But who knows, honestly. That's just my opinion on the matter so it could be really different to what really happens with them.

I'm confused by this argument. (Genuinely, not being argumentative.) You actually think they're actually incapable of doing something for themselves and also sharing it with the audience? Or are you saying that the pictures they post aren't fanservice, because they are genuine moments that they just chose to post a picture or? Because if that's your point, I sort of agree and sort of disagree. I'd say that the word fanservice is being used because of a lack of more accurate term, that yes Dan and Phil's scenario doesn't fit the technical definition but there just isn't a word for 'something real people would have done either way but decided to share for the benefit of a fanbase that wants to see it.' Youtube community/rpf communities have just adapted the term fanservice, though maybe there is/should be a better word for it.

Your second paragraph is more along the lines of what I was trying to say. I don't think they're incapable of doing something for themselves and their audience at the same time, I just think that if that's the case with whatever they're doing/posting, I wouldn't consider it fanservice. If they post a picture for the sole reason of wanting to please fans, that's what I would consider that fanservice. But, I'm sure there are lots of people who would define fanservice as something else. I do think it's a case of "for lack of a better word".alittledizzy wrote:I'm confused by this argument.
