why one might think he's a decent person? deduction. he's friends with a lot of people who are pretty vocal about social issues and they all say he's a lovely person.
And what are people even defending here? Why should he even need defending? I'm just confused why it seems to not be okay to have a opinion on a movie or, as we worked out, not saying what everyone wanted to hear about it. I think it's just strange to be disappointed in Phil for not being Dan.
mermaid blood wrote:Phil deserves just as much scrutiny as Dan on social justice issues, if not more. Prattling and backtracking and getting it wrong and sometimes getting it really right at least shows a thought process, and an active preoccupation. Dan is lumped with the majority of this pressure and expectation from the fans because of the content he makes and the way he expresses himself, whilst Phil experiences the converse. That's fine, it's up to Phil what presence he has and he's autonomous in that. BUT the conversations above me show the unfair and nonsensical outcome of this: he also benefits from what DAN says, through positive projecting and protecting?

ah, no. if you don't wish to be engaged on a certain level as a social figure and media personality the most you (fairly) win is a shrug, and an ambiguous 'well i certainly HOPE he feels ___'. you don't get to have your cake and eat it too, benefitting from the actions of someone very close to you.
what kind of cake does he get to eat here though? I think it's quite the opposite, when Dan comments on some "important issue" people expect Phil to do the same and then give him shit if he fails to do so.
And Dan chooses to make the comments he makes, he likes to rant and to sometimes provoke. But Phil is just a different person, he seems to be a sucker for harmony and I sometimes get the impression he isn't overly confident in expressing himself. I for one can relate to that, very much. I guess you relate to Dan more...
mermaid blood wrote:The argument from the phandom 'this is why Phil doesn't express opinions' holds no water, there is no evidence for it. it's especially ridiculous as it doesn't seem to apply to Dan in any way, and arguably Dan shows more troubling signs of not coping with attention on his every opinion and decision than Phil ever has. It is a choice Phil makes, and Phil is an adult who is accountable to this choice like any other.
of course there's no evidence for this. We discuss a lot of things there is no evidence for. But it is my honest opinion that if I were in his shoes, if I realized that a tiny little comment I made regarding a movie I've seen would cause this kind of drama (and it was the movie comment that triggered this whole discussion), I would be even more careful of what I said in the future. Maybe that's not the reason, maybe he just doesn't want to talk about it, maybe he's a homophobic racist (:gasp: he must be if he was a little bit bored watching a movie), but where's the point?
Phil's been like this all this time, why should he change now? Even oldschool Phil wasn't a beacon of social awareness, that's just not who he is or what he wants to do on a public platform. Why do people expect a complete change of character?
And as for "it's unfair to use this argument for Phil when Dan doesn't get this privilege although he's the one who really struggles with reactions to his opinions": I call bullshit. He might say this but that doesn't mean it's true. Actions speak louder than words, why would he do it again and again if he's so troubled by it? and just because Phil doesn't speak about not wanting to give an opinion doesn't mean he has no problem with it, if that were the case he would do it more.

Sorry, this post is a mess. I'm not overly confident in expressing myself.

yes yes yes

I personally hate the comparisons of dan and phil that seem to occur nor do I agree with the statement that phil must be super informed because he lives with Dan. Those to me are two independent facts that don't necessarily go together.

As for Dan having more scrutiny, that's his personal doing. He is openly willing to make a claim, therefore, he is also agreeing to experience whatever backlash is associated with it. That's just how he built his channel and fanbase to be, and he lives under that sociopolitical blanket and prides himself in it (as do his audience), so good for him. Phil, on the other hand, doesn't and he shouldn't have to just because dan does. They are individual people with individual tastes and as long as phil isn't an asshole or says anything racist/sexist, there's nothing really to deduce from his views except that he is someone who is caring and empathizes and that's about it. If he isn't comfortable stating his opinions on matters, should we expect him to? And as many people said, what importance does a youtuber we stans' words have? He's not going to fix any of the issues by acknowledging them. And yea people are passionate and want the people they look up to share their belifs but isn't that a form of entitlement? Why is that an expectation as a fan?

We are blanketed in a hidden corner of the internet under anonymous names so it's easy for us to state our opinions without shame, but put me in front of a camera with thousands of people picking my words and I won't share anything. I care passionately but I still won't do it. I'm not "deducing" that phil is this way or using anxiety as an excuse for his hesitation, but it's a viable explanation. Also watching Phil in vidcon conventions struggling to speak even when he puts the mic to his lips kinda shows me that even with small, nonpolitical things such as advice for youtube, he will stick with already known facts instead of ad-libbing. That to me shows, that even with so much experience and knowledge in a particular field, he will stick to the answers he knows and has previously shared instead of those he thinks about on the spot (same with the boncas speech). Lastly, its important to realize that nothing said here is ever the set truth, moreso, just theories on why they act a certain way based on watching them : shrug:

Also, this is not be shutting down scrutiny or cradling phil the angel bean, rather expressing the right to not expect someone to say something just to make us feel better. Im actually living for all your opinions and viewpoints because I do love scrutinizing phil and picking him apart. If phil does say something, we should rip it apart as much as we do dan, but I also think it shouldn't be done for the case of "scrutinizing phil just because we scrutinize dan and that's not fair!!11" but instead because he does say something and it did bother people (which can arguably be the case here)
yay i love running in circles with my thoughts

Viola Davis' win for Supporting Actress in "Fences" was right on - awesome performance in a really good small film.

I'm curious about those watching the Academy Awards in other countries: do they show the US commercials, local commercials, or something else during the breaks?

I'm in the UK watching it on the Sky Movies channel, during the break adverts for Sky Movies are shown and then there is a presenter and a few known people from the UK sat on a couch commentating on the winners for like a minute before it returns to the show, no USA ads or regluar English ads either as it's showing on a cable type channel! :)

They are showing clips of the nominated movies and fillers during the breaks, where i guess the US commercials are shown originally? I find it amusing that they probably have to do this because of german regulations about lengths and amounts of commercials. Becaue honestly the amont of breaks in this show is absurd.

Aww, the snoozing Phil picture is adorable. I hope he's not too disappointed over missing the later parts of the show.

I love them taking sneaky (and adorable) pics of each other. But whenever I see a sleeping Dan or a sleeping Phil, my mind always goes back to that adorable moment in the docu.

Yep, they are definitely at Bryonys. That's the quilt she made.

[offtopic]Local commercials (well, local as in Latin America) + the channel's own commercials. In my country the Oscars are broadcast on TNT with two people interpreting in Spanish over the presenters, the host, the actors, etc., but you can turn that off (if you understand English it gets really annoying really fast).

And I still can't believe I watched the envelope debacle live, but I'm so glad Moonlight won Best Picture! And I'm bitter about Denzel Washington not winning for Fences. I didn't like the adaptation (I read the play before and I felt like it didn't transition well from the text/theatre to the big screen) but his performance was outstanding.[/offtopic]

Uhf, if there's one thing cuter than a cute man it's a cute man asleep. And under such a pretty blanket. How many of us want to hug him to the moon and back? I was confused by the piano, though they couldn't fit a sofa in Dan's room like that and why would they, took a moment to figure it out. I love Bryony's purple trainers in her photo. Feel a bit smug having had a full night's sleep, I'd be wrecked all week if I stayed up like that, I don't know how you can do it beyond your early twenties.

...Tbh, I sometimes forget that they're just bestfriends, not boyfriends (well, in the context of what they say they are in front of the camera). If this is what 2017 will bring us... I'm soooooo living for it

so it's safe to assume he interrupted phil's sleep? Phil must be so used to being woken up by dan getting passionate about something.
I'm so glad there's been some in depth phil discussion here I've been in a "no interaction please" mood this weekend so I've basically been holed up at home watching old phil videos, and it's so interesting to see how absolutely open phil was about himself/his feelings back in the day. Phil used to talk so much about all his friends, like in "staplers are DANGEROUS" he talks about how no one moved back in to uni yet so he's lonely, saying "I'm quite a sociable person, I don't like being on my own for long periods of time." That just seems so open compared to anything he says now. His "burning walrus" video is SO interesting because he talks about how he's scared of graduating and he doesn't know what to do (he also refers to himself as immature, the self-awareness caught me off guard). I swear I had a point to this post but now I'm just overthinking the fact that he honestly had no idea what to do now that he had a masters degree. his suggestion is weather man. i would be terrified I'm so glad his parents helped him out and that YT worked out for him.
rainy_days wrote:Don't forget that Phil is a member of the LGBT+ community and has talked about being bullied before at school. I have no doubt in my mind he's had struggles along with the privilege.
sorry responding to an old post so this is more IG, but if I remember correctly phil said he was bi on a dating profile he never wanted to be public (like, public public, attached to AmazingPhil public)? maybe he said it on a DB or something but still, I wouldn't feel comfortable saying phil's part of the LGBT community without him ever associating himself as so first. even if he did say he was bi on a dailybooth or twitter response or something, a person's understanding of their own sexuality can evolve and change, especially when we're talking about 7/8 years of silence. Phil actively refrains from commenting on his sexuality so categorizing him as part of community he does not publicly connect himself to doesn't seem right imo.

And being bullied is definitely a struggle which is very important to talk about and I'm very glad Phil has talked about (Ik he has I just can't think of an example of him doing so for some reason), but it's not the type of struggle pertaining to the fact that Phil has the privilege to be apolitical.

honestly, I've speculated that Phil leans more conservative in political views which could be why he stays silent on political topics--a good chunk of his active viewership are left-leaning, so he would lose a lot of stans if he said something like "i dont see why movies think they need to always have political adgendas" or "the oscars need to stop being so PC, la la land deserved to win" (#fb feed quotes).

In all honesty if he said something like "I don't believe in feminisim I believe in equality" I would change my profile picture to natalie dormer. And to be clear, I don't think he believes these things, but the fact is he's stayed silent on enough topics that it's a possibility. Liking a picture of a dog at the woman's rally doesn't mean anything. he has no obligation to give opinions on current events, but it is valid to wonder why someone with the privilege and megaphone wouldn't take advantage of that to talk about something you believe in.

I have such a bad habit of editing a post a billion times after posting just to change a few commas or spelling errors

I agree with most of what you've said, dontpanic, except for the last part. I think liking a picture of a dog at the Women's March means something. He wouldn't have done that if he was against the March or didn't care. The dog was carrying a feminist sign after all. Then there's all the times he subtly dragged Trump. He's not loud about it and he does decide to stay apolitical most of the time but it's not like there's nothing there or that the few times he chose to allude to an opinion don't count. He might not be the most open about some things but I really don't think he's hiding a secret conservative agenda. It's probably just a choice to keep politics away from AmazingPhil because it doesn't match his happy feel-good content.

[offtopic]I totally missed the Oscars because I thought I had to be somewhere this morning and went to bed early just to find out I actually have the whole day off. My own damn fault, that is. But I'm so glad both "Moonlight" and Viola Davis won.[/offtopic]

Some Dan & Phil mentions in this new video from Duncan (in Japanese but has subs). He tells the story of why he and Mimei quit their agency and how D&P helped them out at Vidcon when their agency only got them the most basic passes.

Back on the internet after avoiding Oscars spoilers all day, and that picture of Phil sleeping is so adorable omg

So so so so glad Moonlight won, but holy shit my heart was in my mouth watching that unfold. Wow.

To add something at least mildly substantial to this post, I agree with Birdie that the women's march tweet Phil retweeted did mean something. Even after all my posts berating Phil's lack of acknowledgement of Moonlight's importance (I am truly sorry for dragging this on), I don't believe for a second that Phil holds particularly conservative views, not only because I don't think Dan would stand for that but also because there have been instances to suggest that Phil is a very compassionate person who is quite progressive in a lot of ways.

This was such an interesting video, even aside from the Dan and Phil mentions (though really - damn, that was nice of them) it's a good inside look at what sounds like a pretty crap management company.
