hello! your first proper post was definitely a good start but i especially agreed with this three points. the first was just funny tbh but bless him for trying.
the second one i agree, it's not worth going into much anymore, but the culture has some massive issues and is generally really looked down on. not just for massively corrupt corporations cough johnnies getting young women to spend a fortune to keep the business going, but for the far larger issues like the encouragement of JK/loli/shota cultures. not an equivalent to fandoms.
and yes to the last. it's defintely homoerotic and i don't doubt that dan doesnt actually drool over haru but the show does have a genuine plot and stuff, and characters who arent boys in speedos and are still excellent characters. it's probably about halfway gay.

however as haru as a character is an underage teenage boy...

I'm going to loop him hushing his Haru for eternity now, k thx bye
Dan is going to be my gateway drug into anime, i can feel it.
Did Dan just come out ? Did i really hear him say he subscribed to 'Free' for the speedo's yet some kind of storyline unexpectedly took stood in the way in season 2. I feel you Dan and i'm glad we think the same. Boys that hot just shouldn't be allowed in speedo's or any clothes for that matter

Well ... if he's joking he's really being a full time internet homo.

Such funny much yummy.

As much as I like anime, the way Dan talks about it in the main video irks me for some reason (idek) BUT overall I liked it, always nice to see those little sketches, and the Haru pillow of course I liked the recommendations too.
Actually... just unexpected 18 minutes of Dan talking don't mind me I'm trash.

This is exactly the content I wanted to see and agree that it's not the best timing before tour but hopefully with the UK tour under their belt he knows how to manage his time, energy, etc, and still make some fun, sketchy things while out on the road. And a vlog once and a while wouldn't kill you just saying I feel like this was almost a testing-waters video to see how people would respond and now that it's all positive, hopefully he'll feel he can be more open/more himself on dinof.

anyways, I want to know where dan got that storm trooper shirt he used in the part where he talked about "western media hiatuses." It reminds me of pac sun's/on the byas' star wars line, but I checked and it isn't. (also wouldn't make sense considering they're based in america and probably too inexpensive for dan's taste)

For real though, that's a good point. From the POV of someone who doesn't watch anime, massive anime titties defying the laws of gravity seems like such a staple of internet culture. Nearly any other comedy YTer would've joked about that, since it's an easy, culturally-relevant reference to make. Beyond the sexuality discussion, I think it says a lot about how he's trying to portray himself on his channel. It aligns with the recent changes in his channel, such as changing questionable thumbnails and unlisting Men V.Women video.

Of course, the topic of how Dan (and Phil, I guess...?) portray their sexual identities on their main channels is really interesting to me. I enjoy observing this slow trend of more and more explicit declarations of same-sex attraction. This nearly felt like a coming out video for fuck's sake. Slap my ass if I'm wrong, but he hadn't really on his main channel before his latest Tyler collab, right? (I know he's said things earlier on the gaming channel. Too lazy to sort through the attraction threads atm.) Keep it up, Dannifer. Before you know it, we'll get a sequel to the Strange Porn video where Dan can actually agree that Ash had a cute butt.

well fuck me

if it's a spon what it takes for dan to make content like this then idec anymore, take all the spons daniel!!!

i loved both videos, i was super into anime during my early teenage years and i still watch some from time to time, the main channel one was entertaining and honestly i love seeing him give no fucks about what interpretation of his sexuality people might get from it, the recs one was good too, i liked the anime he chose although i would have mentioned ouran in the actual video and not just the description, to me it's the best comedy anime ever made, but it's true that you need some context about anime culture to fully appreciate it so maybe that's why it got an honorable mention

i want to get them to watch code geass, it's my fave anime, i'm surprised they haven't watched it tbh, everyone and their mom was obsessed with it back in the day, but i think they might like it (haven't watched evangelion but i think they are pretty similar, although code geass isn't that messy and difficult to understand, someone more anime savvy please correct me?)

also loved the phil mentions, it would have been weird if he didn't mention him at all considering that we know they watch everything together

back to the sexuality discussion (soz for this mess of a post) does dan's even qualify as a glass closet anymore? i mean honestly he's very clear about it the only reason people assume he's straight is heteronormativity ('oh he's only joking' ) other youtubers that were considered to be in a glass closet (joey graceffa for example) at least avoided the topic no matter how obvious it was, i personally feel like there's no closet at all, the only thing he hasn't done is claim some sort of sexuality label (in recent years) but that's not really something he has to do if he doesn't feel like it

I've been wondering since the beginning of this ~more generous~ era, what is Phil's take on Dan's more and more liberal comments.

Of course I guess he has no problem with it seeing as they surely discuss those things but it just goes to show the growing contrast between Dan's online evolvement and Phil's reluctance to discuss even slightly controversial topics. It's true though that he provides us with more interesting glimpses of different sides of himself nowadays, mainly on DAPG.

Also, has the subject of Dan's tumblr likes been brought up recently? I wanted to check his tag and opened up his likes instead:
Image
(We know the picture but wow at him actually liking it. And the caption “Danny, be good and open wide for Dr. Philip” ummmm  )
At this rate, will he be cuddling a Phil pillow by the end of the year?

(First post in the main thread yay)

K so I know I'm going to be echoing a lot of what was already said here so this won't be a huge contribution but I need to enthuse.

I went in with my expectations pretty low, especially considering that the main vid was a spon but dude. Holy shit. I am so. SO. happy with both of these videos! This is the kind of content I've been missing from Dan. The actual real effort. The passion. THE GENUINE ENTHUSIASM. You could tell he really meant it, you know? Especially in the second channel vid. I think I may have actually enjoyed that one more just because of how into it he was.

I loved that he wasn't just listing off the latest trending anime (what I expected tbh) and took the time to really talk about ones that he enjoys and describe the plots and the genres and what tastes they'd appeal to and stuff that would actually help someone who was unfamiliar with anime. I'm a gross anime enthusiast myself so this just really meant a lot to me.

And of course I commend him for all the shameless mentions of cute boys in swimsuits but ya'll have that pretty well covered so I won't linger. Great videos though. I'm quite pleased.

Now to go catch up on all the new posts that inevitably appeared while I was typing this

I don't want to delve into this topic too heavily because it might be too OT, but I feel like these statements are too Western and it bothers me slightly because some people tend to get carried away by the social justice wave to bother to actually put their ideas in the perspective of the culture they're trying to impose on.

I used to think very similarly, but seeing these two things in particular made me rethink how I was seeing this subject.

I'm not trying to argue that "otaku culture" (which is not even a very correct term but whatever) isn't problematic, because there are many other things that are (as jaej mentioned, sexualizing minors). I just ask that anyone who wants to make similar statements to try and see it from every angle, not just their Western ideals.

i wonder how much dan actually knows about japanese (anime) culture; d'you think he watches a shit ton of anime and goes on tumblr and sees these terms like otaku and just rolls with it? it seems to me that there are a lot of issues that he is simply not aware of when it comes to japanese fan culture as previously mentioned by esso & jaej

not only but it sort of leads to it - like also the amount of queerbaiting on TV, ... in general popular culture. I don't think he is straight (personally) but the alarm bell is there. And I don't think that he would do baiting, but yes, there is that side to consider not regarding him as person but from the random viewer perspective. general viewer seeing it as something that everyone is doing but doesn't mean anything cause that's what the TV fan culture taught them.. which is sad because it plays into the hands of the everyday heteronormativity (I really have deep seated hate for the shows and runners that brought this about (and yeah did he need to mention Moffat :sideeye: ) )

I still have so many pages to catch up in this thread, but since I don't have time right now, I'm gonna state my opinion on the video now. The next time I come back there will be even more pages and the discussion will probably have moved on (seriously the thread is moving so fast, how can you all keep up)

I really liked the video, although I'm not really interested in anime. An ad is definitely better when the person advertising has a genuine interest in the topic/product.

Yeah his pronunciation of the Japanese terms was horrible, but you can't expect someone that doesn't learn or speak Japanese to pronounce those word right (although it did make me cringe, as i'm learning Japanese)

And wow, I absolutely did not expect those nonchalant comments about speedos, abs and the haru pillow plus the thumbnail. Isn't this the first time he expressed attraction to men like that on his youtube channels? I can't recall any youtube videos where he's been like that? Making those comments on younow in front of a few thousand people doesn't quite have the same reach as on his youtube channel. I do hope this marks a change and he'll be more open about it from now on.

ok, going back to watch the videos again doing my homework for uni now

i don't think i can really impose on my own culture which was actually imposed on us, as zainichi koreans. this isn't really a case of imposing western ideals, but of pointing out that that culture is very dangerous and that it's misinterpreted in the west to be seen as something that's accepted in japan as something commonplace, so when it's popularised and encouraged these aspects are either or put down to japan just being craaaazy again. liking nerdy things is common and accepted, yeah, but not the actual otaku culture i know its not a very correct term but there isnt really a correct term to translate from. besides that, the first image isn't really something to take belief from. the way the term waifu is used online isn't correct and is kind of gross.
i don't think dan's particularly bad for it given how common it is, i just don't want it to be something praised about him as a sign of how #relatable he is

I think everything I wanted to say has already been said. but honestly when I saw that thumbnail I think I genuinely went into shock. I freaking LOVED those videos, and as much as I usually hate #spon, I'm perfectly happy with it if we get videos like this out of it. We got sketches, Dan talking passionately about something for a solid 11 minutes, the de-haruing of haru, and Fully Bi Dan (as much as I would love for this to settle the sexuality argument forever for all those who still think he's straight, I've already seen someone dismiss it as "fanservice". Sighhh. )

I haven't watched any anime apart from Your Lie in April, which I LOVED (mainly because i watched it at the same time as japhan was happening and it gave me lots of emotional cherry blossom pheels) but the way Dan was talking about anime, I suddenly really wanna watch some more. Which is a terrible idea seeing as I have exams in a few weeks but meh.

This may sound really weird and possibly offensive (whoops?) but the vibe I've always gotten from the two of them, especially having met them, and my experience with friends who are gay and bisexual men and how they generally carry themselves, is that Phil is more bisexual and open-minded. Pansexual if anything. He just enjoys people, regardless of their sex. Dan is more gay than anything, and very possessive of Phil and doesn't have much of an interest in women. I could be 100% wrong, but eh, just vibes.
