I've got 6 pages to catch up on, so this may have already been said, but I was hoping for socks (mismatched of course), their own scented candle, and bath bombs :(

Oh well, maybe next time!

hyliandeity wrote:it's almost a dead topic now but in response to anybody saying that the t-shirt is appropriating somehow (lol) i think you should have a look at this. it's a good insight so i thought it was worth mentioning, this topic will probably come up again tbh:
not exactly the same topic, but it's pretty much the same deal.
I don't think it is the "same deal" at all. The video is about non-japanese people wearing a traditional Japanese clothing item outside of experiences of cultural exchange, while this is about two white English men marketing and selling a shirt that tries to live up to the "Japanese aesthetic" to their fan base of people from all races.

And as many people have said before me, one person's opinion from one culture does not represent everyone from that culture's viewpoint, nor does that mean they suddenly become an expert on cultural appropriation, orientalism, or hegemony.

also that video presumes that Japanese people from Japan are better deliberators about this issue than Japanese-Americans? especially on a topic that seems especially relevant to the intersecting identities of Japanese-Americans and on a topic about something that is happening in America. Also, there could be more self-centered reasons besides idealistic notions of cultural sharing for why Japanese clothing lines and businesses are encouraging foreigners to wear a kimono.

This is a really complicated issue. for example, art critics dont even agree what monet was doing with that painting--critiquing appropriation that happened during his time? Supporting it? Who knows. Add what the MFA did to it and how people are reacting to it makes it so much more complicated. Is the MFA entirely missing the point that Monet meant his painting as a critique? It would seem not, since they write on their website that Monet's painting IS a critique. So what is the point of having visitors wear a kimono and take a picture? It seems like people are unknowingly making the same point Monet was apparently making--the west still fetishizes Japan. If so, that's not exchanging cultures as the video you linked to suggests at all. In fact, it is a hilarious testament to the ignorance on all sides.

The best thing I think we can do is keep in mind how complex this issue is and not try to dilute it, no matter what side we are coming from.

Doesn't seem like the right time to bring up less srs bsnss but if it waits until later it'll be forgotten. Anyone notice in the new poster Phil is 'taller' or posing higher than Dan in all the photos? Coincidence or deliberate?

Anyways it's a cute couple photoshoot and I want it.

With the photos from the new poster, am I the only one who seems to think that those are the same photos shoot from that interview way back in November? You know, the one with Dan leaning on Phil's shoulders and stuff. The outfits and background look very similar to those...

Interesting theory. How can they be awkward for a minute and then be all mushy the next second?

Maybe they just wear the same outfit because it looks nice? We need IDB detectives.

yeah, they're the same outfits, they're probably from the same shoot. They probably took them as possibilities for a cover or something for TABINOF but then decided to use them for something else instead.

They said this in the newsletter.
We took these photos together in an actual photo booth which resulted in a long line of people waiting behind us and some awkward curtain shuffling but here is the glorious result
They wouldn't have the rights to use photos from the Sunday Times since the copyright belongs to that newspaper. And they wouldn't look so comfortable if there was a photographer there.

Often times those photo booths only have a little stool or thin bench to sit on, resulting in people having to sit in each other's laps in order to all fit in the photo.

Just sayin.
Just, you know, keep that in mind when looking at these photos where their shoulders overlap.

Dan has his earrings in for the poster (yay) and wasn't wearing them in the Sunday Times photos. They just know what clothes they look good in.
Thanks and have a great day! Oil me

I don't know if it's just me but have you guys noticed this thing Dan's been doing recently where he says something like in a mocking tone and then he comments something else so as to backtrack? Like he thinks what he's saying is a bit rude or something so he tries to fix it. I'll leave two examples but I'm sure there a couple more, I'm just too lazy too look for them, sorry :wahh:

Ohhhh, you're right!
That's so funny though, I wonder where the photobooth was.

I almost want to say that BBC holiday party they went to last year, since Dan was wearing a black T-shirt with the earrings, but according to the vine posted on updatedphan, Phil was wearing a different shirt (though a diva always has at least one outfit change throughout the evening, so who knows with Phil.) Knowing them, they were probably just out at a private event and we just didn't know about it.

Maybe they went to a mall or something? Do they have those in England?

Had the same thought. Unless it was an informal get together they're dressed too casually for an event.

The photos are less posed than usual but they're still staged. They were definitely taken for merch and not something casual. An event or party doesn't seem like the best time and place for that since it probably took them a few tries to get such good photos too.

Peeps. I hate to burst the photobooth bubble, but I genuinely think the site's description is a joke and these pics were probably taken in front of Phil's wall just like all the rest of their photos are. I've never seen a photobooth get that HD. Plus it would explain this comment:

Though tbf I wouldn't be surprised if they took them the same day as the Sunday Times pics. It's a good look.

Re: Japhan shirt, spoilered cause the discussion's basically moved on, sorry
The Japanese twitter phandom seems split between being really happy about it & thinking it's adorable, and thinking the design is ugly/too embarrassing to wear outside, lol.
There are some people that think it was kinda stupid to put Japanese on the shirts when neither of them understand it, but no one's really mad about it?

i'm just a white girl that studied abroad and has some friends in the jp phandom, and this is only based on the opinions of those i've talked to on twitter, so obviously i can't speak over anyone that disagrees. but the general consensus seems to be positive

:tsk: Lowering the tone of the discourse, as per usual, cora808.
They don't have ''malls'' in England like they do in America, you do have shopping centres which are kind of the same, but not as massive and are not entirely indoors. You also have photobooths at train stations, but as said before the pictures are way too high-quality to actually come from a photobooth.

I don't wanna get too much into this but i definitely think racism and cultural appropriation is more than just a certain racial group feeling offended or not.
People like that girl in Kimono video, she lived in Japan, knows how different Japanese and Japanese Americans are in terms of viewing this kind of topics. But she fails to recognize more complexed reason behind all this. Japan compare to America, is a rather monoculture society, a lot of Japanese wouldn't encounter such a situation in their lifetime, so they are naturally less aware of such issues, general speaking, however Japanese American who grown up in such a multinatinalism environment, they are more aware of it naturally. And there are other influence like eurocentrism and Fukuzawa Yukichi's ideology of adopting Western modernisation and others. So personally i don't see white people complaining "cultural appropriation" is a big issues, cuz it's not just personal experience, but there is also a definitive line between what is and what not.
But lbr this is probably one of the least offensive things they've done to Japan.

Anyway, Dan farted and Phil got a bruised butt It get funnier everytime i think about it
