Okay, that was a pretty funny thread. Some of my favourites:
I just watched 5 minutes of them. They're gay right?
I thought that was one of those things which people do nowadays. You know, get two apparently cute guys and spread stories that they are gay (like one direction). There is a word for it. I read it somewhere....
(shipbaiting? queerbaiting?) lolwut. no lah, you've got deppy backwards.
British youtubers. Famous for being adorable.
Their gaming channel where they play the sims is actually pretty hilarious. Or maybe I am just particularly sad. They are definitely aimed at a younger audience than me and I can't really get into their other stuff, but I could watch them play the sims all day long.
I, too, wonder if I am just particularly sad. What is real life?

While I'm watching their own videos I always forget how much of a "big thing" they actually are amongst other youtubers/internet people. Like the recently (?) discussed mention of them in Shane's podcast where he and that girl were practically fangirling over them and it it just feels so weird. To realize that they have such a special status in the vidding scene, even though, lets be really yes they do have a really dedicated fanbase but there are youtubers with WAY more subscribers. (Phil "only" has 3.7million as of now). And the stuff they do is not that ground-breaking either.

This isn't critizising them in any way, I'm perfectly fine with enjoying their videos, I'm just wondering how they gained such a "higher plane level of stardom" if you look at it objectively.
When I started watching Dan casually without any background information just judging from his content and behaviour I never even thought he was that big to begin with outside of tumblr and fandom places and was quite surprised to see the BBC show happening.

Sorry this probably has been discussed before but the whole MattG thing made me think about this again.
Do you think it could be a combination of the mystery (and possible aloofness) that surrounds them combined with their massive and ever-present fan base? There is some otherness that puts them in a league of their own, and seemingly intimidates, inspires, and sometimes irritates their peers. Kudos to them, really.

Teehee, yes I did. This is the faintly more photoshopped version. Plus, Dan's mouth is open now lol which is important. Yes.

But that being said, Phil would have to be refraining from saying something like "it's okay, I know him." So I don't know if that theory holds much merit. At first I was on board but then I realized all Phil would need to do is tell his bodyguard that he's okay with talking to MattG. Hmmm...
I believe that was me, but that's not really what i meant.

I wasn't imagining a scenario where this Matt guy went up to Phil and their bodyguard stepped in, not letting him pass, even though deppy saw it.

I was more imagining them passing the room surrounded by their manager and possibly security, which makes them generally harder to approach and thought this Matt guy was pissed that Phil saw him, but didn't make an effort to approach him. Maybe he even tried to talk to Phil when Phil walked by, but was stopped by security and Phil didn't even notice. That's the kind of scenario i had in mind.

Mostly i just meant their general unapproachability and Phil not making an effort to talk to him

I agree that they are kind of on a "different plane", but not just in the YouTube community, outside of it too. I have plenty of friends who almost never go on YouTube, or on the Internet at all for that matter, but still know who they are. My friend's friends met them at an airport a while ago (don't worry, they weren't stalking them, it was a chance meeting) and she texted a group chat we have saying "wow look my friends met dan and phil!". And I was surprised that everyone in the chat not only knew who they were, but seemed to think it was mega-awesome-so-cool that someone they were two degrees seperation from had met them. It seems that even though they don't have nearly as much subscribers as other YouTubers, they're a lot more popular, if that makes sense. I do wonder how it turned out that way.

Here is a bunch of stuff I agree with:
Winston wrote: I feel like Dan is read wrong by people who are not like him. i.e. introverted/unable to fain interest in idiots.

ravenreyes wrote: not knowing anything about that guy except for this he sounds like kind of a dick tbh and not bc he hates dan or whatever, just in general.
swofro wrote: MattG just don't want to believe that he doesn't get Phil approval stamp anymore and blames it on Dan, because why not, he seems so aloof and don't want to make friends, it's gotta be his fault why Phil don't want me anymore, Phil is so nice, he won't do this to me, it's gotta be Dan's influence, not because Phil doesn't like me anymore, if Phil doesn't like me then I am the asshole, and obviously I am not the asshole, Dan is the asshole, this is all Dan's fault.
akui wrote: by looking at MattG, Dan's arrogant attitude(let's just say that he does have one) is somewhat justifiable.

re: is Dan an introvert:

I always see Dan as quite 'extroverted' in the sense that he seems to like/enjoy talking to large audiences (even if they are virtual ones). But I believe him when he says he is socially awkward and neurotic - he may enjoy talking to others but he finds it stressful and may worry about it afterwards. Also I think he's prone to doing things others perceive (/ he perceives others will perceive) as 'weird' or 'odd' or 'awkward'.

Ultimately I think the whole 'introvert' and 'extrovert' categories are kind of crude labels for a complex reality - they are stereotypes which may not neatly encompass all aspects of someone's ability to interact with others.

bluewho You're right, introversion and extraversion are kinda stupid ideas as everyone displays traits of both; however, I think you almost always have a preference for one over the other even if it is just minimal. My point being Dan is probably an introvert with extraverted qualities (like everyone else), but maybe his preference for introversion isn't as great as other introverts.

Ah yes that makes sense, I didn't mean to accuse Phil of shutting out MattG for no reason, the idea that it was probably accidental and Phil was just rushing or didn't notice is also very plausible!

That's really interesting to me because last school year I lived in a dormitory full of freshmen (18yr olds) and only two of them knew who Dan and Phil were, and only one was jealous that I went to TATINOF while the other didn't really care that much. So I got the impression that D&P were still pretty little-known outside of the Youtube world or at least in the generation that is now 18+. I thought maybe they're bigger in the younger generation. However my friend in Australia about my age (19-22), when TATINOF was touring there, said that she was very surprised at the huge amount of people on her facebook who went to TATINOF and even met deppy. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I find people irl who like deppy?

Same here! That's why I am on this forum lol. My 16yr old cousin knew them but didn't care, and I'm trying to get my bf interested as she is on bedrest with twins. I only discovered them around a year ago maybe (feels like less, but i'm not sure) because I mostly watched gaming videos. It's funny because I watched Tomska and Emma Blackery and Ashens, who have worked with them before, and somehow didn't cross their path for years. The main people I watch dont like Youtube as a company or are still small channels, and therefore don't go to the conventions, so i never bothered to look those up either lol.

In his vlog he is very loud, obnoxious and immature, and he's surrounded by a clump(yes i used it) of loud obnoxious friends just like him. If they all write a letter on their forehead and stand in a line, they would probably spell "trouble". If I'm Dan I'd want keep my distance as well.

Also his comment on deppy… i mean either tell us the whole story or stfu.

A lot of ppl criticize deps or other popular tubers being elitists, and i just think why the hell they can't be elitists? Youtube is a business not college club where ppl mingle and make friends, they are co workers as well as competitors, those who can do a good business(not create best content) rise to the top and be the top tier of their career, they don't have the obligation to befriend or help everyone, and they have every right to carefully select who they do business with. Of course if you helped someone but they didn't help you back sucks, as that blonde guy said, but if you a just some random small guy why would you get noticed by the big guys for no reason?

I just want to say I am always lurking and stealing your reaction gifs and images thank you very much

I can't really comment on introversion because I am a textbook case of introvert. If there was a picture dictionary my face would be next to the definition. What he says in videos strikes me as introversion. Also that fear of losing/being replaced by friends. But I can't relate to enjoying being on stage; it frightens me. Then again he had aspirations of being an actor which is often a creative outlet/persona for introverts. Because acting a character is less stressful.

I only know one friend who knows them and she's casual but hasn't kept up since 2013-ish. I guess since I'm the same age as Dan I kind of grow with him so it seems less "whoah I feel so different" and more like "hey he's changing and so am I"
