Sounds a bit like any phandom drama ever. A storm in a glass of water.
I understand Bryony and why she would react that way. I'm not sure how exactly things went down. How did this person get these images from her account? Did he/she just follow her and repost the story with some different captions/ edit the image? That's rather impolite, but a lot of people just ignore the basic fact that whatever your share on these public media is... well public. It's in bad taste to edit and share a picture that is meant to be 'private' but that's the whole contradiction here: it's not any more private if you put it on a site that allows any follower to look and do with the pictures as they please. It's entirely predictable that some people won't respect your personal boundaries. She has worked as a social media manager and is an avid user of social media so she should know the risks of posting anything.

With that in mind though I can only imagine how annoying it must be if years after you stopped making video's yourself, you are still constantly being associated with Dan and Phil by a huge fandom because you happen to (still) be friends.
The kind of boarish messages she gets must really get under your skin after a while. She just can't escape the fandom, whatever she does, because so many people will have their own little thought bubble about her and Dan & Phil and don't spend a second thought about her privacy when they start tweeting around about this newest 'drama', judging her reaction and talking about what she should or shouldn't say without having any real clue of situation and any real connection to Bryony herself.
Yeah, that's why celibrity fame is something i'd never want. I'll just have the side-benefits tyvm :)

(p.s. I am aware of the irony that me voicing an opinion about this only contributes to that massive conversation about her. Even if you unequivocally support her, even if you try to just calmly and politely talk about the situation, you're still paying attention to it and spouting a bunch of opinions. I can imagine that must be so disheartening to her: she's included in a conversation she has little control over whether she wants to or not. She is being judged by a public even if she reacted in an effort to stake out her private sphere and stop it from being associated with Rize or Dan and Phil as public figures)

I do think that it might be a situation where they're aware that their calling attention to things just shines a much, much, much bigger spotlight on it than if Bryony handles it herself. There are people who probably don't even know she exist right now, if they tweeted about her being harassed it would expose her to just... a whole lot more.

I think if they were going to say anything a liveshow would be the setting in which they did it, which is always going to be a much smaller audience than just a social media post. Unfortunately I don't see them tackling anything really divisive on a Rize liveshow while mid-tour.

Anyone know if D&P did any photo removals of Bryony on Instagram? I don’t blame her for being annoyed by this at all.

In a post completely unrelated to anything that is currently happening (as is my tradition) I would like to retract everything I have said about the Skryim VR spider video Dan and Phil put out in June.

My post at the time was something along the lines of "lol what is this premise? Phil was on 'the Skyrim wiki'? Phil found a Skyrim location full of spiders, fired up VR Skyrim, and put a map marker down for Dan to find? Lies all lies. Just own up to your masochism kink, Daniel."

Then today when I was re-watching and at like 6:45 there's this exchange:
D: What did you Google?
P: I just googled--
D: Place with most spiders in Skyrim?
P: Scary... Scariest Skyrim *inaudible*

And Phil is correct. Literally the first google result for Scariest Skyrim is a post on a Skryim Wiki about Crovangr cave (the cave they go to.)

Mind. Blown. Life changed. Reality questioned. Who are Dan and Phil?

I'll put the video below for anyone who wants to relive that experience. But to generalize this somewhat, where do you personally fall on the spectrum of "D&P tell stories however they will be most entertaining' to 'D&P tell stories according to what actually happened'?

Okay I kinda love knowing that the Skyrim thing was legit just Phil kind of trolling Dan for a jumpscare and it wasn't actually some kind of pre-planned thing. I don't remember having a strong opinion one way or the other at the time, but confirmation of their sincerity is always nice.

Here's a snippet from an II show that's just... pure cute domesticity. @rizzo actually did that transcript, so props to her for pointing out that it'd make a cute audio clip.

hm, interesting question @watsonian

I never really questioned Phil's sincerity about that particular statement in the spider. Because it would seem like an unnecessary and odd lie. What would be his motivation to invent a fake motivation here? It sounded like a pretty Phil thing to do, and I don't think the video was motivated by some masochism kink by Dan.

Kind of the opposite. Phil googling for scary places in Skyrim was probably a very deliberate part of making the video. To answer the question about the spectrum, I'm convinced (especially after their video about the texts they send each other) that they talk a bit about what they want to do in a video. I think they at least lightly prepare most of their video's.
They pitch concepts to each other. They agree on what could be some major parts/ the structure of the video. I think they sometimes lightly script the video too. This is how they have always worked. From Dan's first video (it's cute that he still holds the notes for that video as a keepsake) to the baking video's (you don't just 'on the spot' decide to wear one big sweater, or to put in an elaborate part about decorating what you bake) to everything else. It depends on the type of content they want to create how much and what they will prep I think.
But, it's not a random, aimless process. I think they do almost everything with the aim of entertaining us. As Dan said 'youtube is why i'm here'. It is their 'job'. That means they must have given some serious thought about all the aspects of the creative process. Including what humor and content their audience likes, what they are willing to do and share, how they will deliver it etc... Everything that comes with being a 'professional youtuber' is nearly invisible to us (just like many aspects usually are with other jobs).
So yup i think most of what they say and do should be looked at as them acting in their role as entertainer. This doesn't mean every joke is written out, or that everything they say and so insincere, or that there is no spontaneity in their content at all. Just that what we see will always be colored by two smart and funny people who have an intent, and work very hard to make a 'product' we enjoy.

I believe what they say and then feel sad when people post “lol, lies”. Though now I’ve got used to that and tend to feel more suspicious. They don’t even know how lucky they are I still like them despite any lying. Hard pass for anyone I actually know.

This is an interesting discussion (not the Skyrim, the insta drama) to catch up on while writing about themes of the show and D&P’s relationship with their audience. Though I just hopped on here to ask if anyone could make out what Phil said in the back of Dan’s instastory, or if it was just a grunt of agreement. (I tried posting this hours ago but my key pad on my iPad froze, weird).

I will say they dashed out of Cleveland really quickly, we saw their tour bus pulling out with lots of friendly honks from the driver, though you could only see him and the security guy up front. And someone on Tumblr recorded them exiting the side door and getting on the bus. They probably wanted to get that two hour drive over so they could shower and go to bed in Columbus.

Ooo just noticed the danandphilshop is down for maintance. Also Martyn has been back in London for a few days. Phil merch soon please!

why does this make me feel so demon???
dan just watching phil in his 3 towels, judging him.
the skyrim thing lol that's cute, i think dnp are exaggerating less this year (i may have a lot of people disagree and i totally understand) but i do think to myself a lot, what do they exaggerate about?

"lips like kylie"
phil wearing lipstick is such a good concept, dan agrees ;)

People aren't saying 'lol, lies' in a malicious way, though. It's more that there's been an understanding that sometimes Dan and Phil simplify what goes into making a movie or exactly how structured the process is for the sake of things appearing fluid or spontaneous on camera. I don't think this is even something Dan and Phil try to hide, given that they've got a history of being much more honest about things in liveshows talking to the core audience. Things like Dan saying he bought the kangaroo onesie, then in the video pretending like he'd never seen it... or Phil doing a sleepless night when it was very obviously not night time, as per the time on the computer... or even something as simple as Phil changing the name of the trainer in his gym video but then Dan using the trainer's real names. White lies are part of the streamlining process when it comes to being entertainers. So people who naturally assume that some streamlining might be happening don't make me sad, because I don't sense any ill intent behind it. Thinking that perhaps the Skyrim video was a place Dan already knew in the game or that they discussed the idea beforehand but he pretended not to know just seems like an assumption in line with other previously proven correct assumptions.

I know that’s usually the case, so let it go, but when there have been times it wasn’t just for entertainment and either way, I feel taken for a fool anyway.

It's high time we had a bit of new phan poof discourse. So lemme just slide in here and offer you... #TowelDiscourse.

There are 2 questions I arrive upon after hearing this exchange. First, why is Dan asking Phil where the towels are? Do these 2 best friends and roommates share bath towels? Is that.... platonic? I'm gonna assume they've been laundered for my own personal comfort.

But more importantly.... Aren't we meant to assume they have different bathrooms in their new place?

"Phil's" grey bathroom featured in his sleepless night vid (and one of Dan's vids I can't remember)...
Image
And Dan's featured.... everywhere else.
So, why is Dan... looking for bath towels..... in any location where Phil's taken a shower? :sherlock:

My friends, I think we all know the answer: When you share a bedroom, you probably share the ensuite too. ;)

this made me giggle, but yeah that's where my mind went.
towel discourse, very refreshing. innocent.
might i add the "arm chair" dan could be referencing that was shown in his room from old liveshows in the post-moving days last year? where y'all's spotted a straightener and hair dryer in front of phil's mirror? in this essay i will...
(this is making me feel slightly nostalgic lol i'll stop now)

Lol. I mean they did just have the one bathroom for five years. But now that they have half a dozen or so bathrooms they still want to share. Maybe they didn’t even think to buy extra sets of towels. And the sitting around in towels thing is something Phil has been doing for a long time. I don’t have receipts but I seem to recall something from when they lived together in Manchester (Dan also just called Phil’s ensuite “the bathroom” back then). Also this Instagram post:

I started search for tweets but there were just too many recent ones from fans.

Also “towel discourse” doesn’t prove anything new to me but I still find the bants cute.

Actually I'm starting to think thats pretty standard for them after the show. My friend and I were hoping to see them on the way out after the show in st. louis so we could say good bye, but by the time we walked out the side door that their tour bus was parked by they were already gone (probably only took us literally a minute to walk out after they had left the stage). People said they ran out straight after getting off stage and straight onto the bus and pulled out immediately. And there were a lot of people outside, so tbh it kinda makes sense that its easier to just run on the bus straight after while people are filing out than to have to wait until the crowd completely disperses. I remember seeing videos after the bbc radio shows that there would be a big crowd waiting on them outside the building, so they've probably had the plan to get out as quick as possible as they've been dealing with it for years.
it kind of made me sad tbh cause the whole end of the show is "you're as important as us as we are to you" and then straight after they have to plan an escape because the phandom can be so much sometimes. like obviously they're tired and probs just want to rest after the show not be greeted with a mob of fans all wanting to get a pic and say hello (not that i think the fans have any ill will, its just kind of gotten out of hand ya know?)
sorry this was such a rant but my friend and i had a long discussion about if after because we were honestly so shocked at how quickly the boys had to gtfo the theatre

I think it's a lot less to do with 'escaping fans' than to get to their next destination as quickly as they can, especially if there's a hotel they need to check into. Though I don't doubt that they probably don't want to spend another half hour or so greeting people at stage door after they just met a bunch of people and put on a show.

Yeah, I think it’s pretty standard post-show rountine, especially in the states. It seemed like they were ha going around after a bit during this first few shows in the UK, but that was probably because of meeting colleagues and post show run downs with the director and stuff.

Ahhh speaking of after show packing up, when we walked behind the venue where the loading trucks were, we saw two dogs out on the grass and if you go to Lauren of Merch’s latest instastories (@lauren.koonz) it’s the same tour puppers! Yes I am procrastinating writing a show review, I’m sorry.

I'm also inclined to think the quick out is because they get hotel rooms on nights when the drive is only a couple hours and are eager to get there and get a real sleep. (Especially Phil, jesus christ, he seems to literally not be able to sleep on the bus.)

This is a really cute idea for a photo op, props to this person.

I was new the the phandom as TATINOF US was starting up, and I remember that a lot of the early content was videos of crowds of fans screaming at them as they tried to get to their bus. Eventually they asked (I forget by which medium) that fans not meet them at the stage door. (As we were just discussing, they are loathe to make any requests to their fans.) After that, updatedphan and other big sites stopped posting those videos.

I'm sure there were still some fans lurking by the stage door at some venues, but it definitely was no longer a thing. To the relief of Deppy and their crew and security, I'm sure!
