Catallena wrote: You misunderstand. I get praise for my volunteering, because I put in more than the minimum required effort. I don't want to get praise for doing anything less than I do and I don't think that others should get praise for barely passing the bar the way that YouTubers (not just D&P) do. That's not how the world works to me. Dan and Phil do the same thing every other YouTuber does, sometimes better and sometimes worse, they're not special because of it.
Oh that's fine, it's your basic premise I disagree with here, though yeah, a bit of a misunderstading about your volunteering activities, though those are hardly the main point here.

You're welcome. I hope they did listen to people and decided to do better and that that's why the AUS tour was better than the USA one, but I'm just not gonna praise them for that?? Why should I? 'You decided to not take advantage of your adoring fandom for a second time this year, good job uwu' Nah fam. I'm happy that the AUS tour went differently, I really am, but that's where my praise ends. As far as the book goes, I feel like the US tour will be the main selling point of the book whether AUS will be featured or not (I find it so odd to cram in another tour leg close to what imagine would be a first print date but ok I'm not the poor graphic designer dealing with the deadline here), so keeping quiet while down under served no purpose.
I'm in no way saying you have to praise them - I just also want to be able to express that I see it as a good thing and a sign of learning without being painted with a very broad brush of "everyone praises every fart that comes out of them no matter the smell of it" or whatever your wording was.

I don't feel like I presented my opinions as facts, sorry if you felt that way. My opinions are strongly worded, but that's really all it is although I understand why someone might get a different impression. I know there are plenty of people who love Phil's content, collabs included, and that there are plenty of people who enjoy Dan's content, ISG included. Whatever floats your boat, I'm glad that it makes you all smile. They still make plenty of content that I do enjoy and that makes me happy as well.
Well it's nice we're all happy, though just to be clear, my case is not "loves everything", as my previous replies stated, I can have issues with specific things while still having a positive look on things overall. If I hadn't, I'd find keeping up very draining, personally.
Catallena wrote: I love this because you're like 'it's fine we all have different opinions' but at the same you're definitely not fine with my negative POV. Or that's what it feels like to me. As stated in a previous post, I love criticizing my favs just as much as fangirling over them. I'm having loads of fun, I don't need be ~positive~ for that thank you. Again I'm glad that you enjoy everything and are so positive, but can I do it my way? Without being accused of being stuck in the past? Unless we're talking Gen 1 vs. Gen 6 Pokémon, nostalgia is a weak argument.
I'm sorry that's what it feels like to you. I definitely am fine with different opinions, I think they're necessary for a good discussion forum to exist, though yes, personally, I definitely don't like or agree with your views, which might show up in my tone as the evening hours progress and I feel like the main point I'm trying to make keeps getting lost in the noise.
The nostalgia comment was not directed at you, if you recall, you don't really sound like someone who
does nostalgia to me, but I maintain that nostalgia colors a lot of people's views when they're talking about their past content as somehow dramatically more well-crafted.
Catallena wrote: It's really not that strange. The number of subs don't matter. Growth of subs does. That's not a hard concept to grasp I think? Nobody matches their sub count in view count, and the last thing is what makes you money. Sub count just looks cool and gets you shiny play button from YouTube. But not gaining subs is bad, as it means that your channel and content is only a small step away from losing subs. D&P are obviously not there yet, but their growth isn't as much as it was. Even people like Caspar have surpassed them and his views ain't as good as D&P's. Dunno about D&P's view count growing or not, I feel like it's been kinda the same for a year but that might be incorrect. Anyway, stabilizing is never good if it's about YouTube numbers. The only way is up.
I think that maintaining a loyal audience is everything wheras getting people to subscribe off of a single video that never come back to your channel again after that (which is the case for people like Caspar, big subs increase, views stay same or even go down). D&P do a great job of keeping their GA interested despite having an uploading schedule that in no way benefits from YT's algorithms. Steady growth over a long period of time is where you want to get with most businesses, and that's what their channels are. A huge increase often preceeds a huge fall (Tyler Oakley, for instance, look at Tyler Oakley's numbers lately).
Catallena wrote: I never said they don't deserve their fandom, don't reach. But they are definitely very lucky to have such a dedicated and powerful fanbase. They built the foundation, but they don't do any fostering anymore. A distraction from some shit storms here and there maybe, but all they really need to do is exist. Phandom will take care of the rest. We promote them, we support them, we keep them relevant. Plenty of YouTubers come with a decent sized fandom, but the phandom is a bit special and even organizations like the BBC know. There's a reason D&P are probably gonna return to R1 while the other YouTubers aren't.
We are opposites, because I'm not sure I would subscribe. Maybe I would because they seem nice and are sometimes pretty entertaining, but in the end I'd just let most of their videos rot in my subbox (I know me I do this a lot). But they don't need to lure me in anymore, I've been here for the past few years. I've grown to be able to love and criticize them at the same time, out of the point of view of both a fan and someone who doesn't really get their appeal (anymore). But I love them and they still make content that I love. Together with the fandom experience and the shipping, that's enough to make me stay. Without any of those three I think that I would still be fond of them and watch them, but not stan anymore. Many of my old phandom friends that I knew via Tumblr have moved on or are really only in it anymore for the Phan puzzle. Circle of life or some shit I guess.
But yeah, agree to disagree.
"They're not responsible for the community that was build, they just benefit from it" definitely sounded like you were saying they don't deserve their fandom to me, but I'm glad to know I was mistaken then. I do agree they're lucky, but I also think lucky doesn't equal undeserving. They do quite a bit to foster a community in my mind, be it twitter interaction that keeps people responding, fanart promotion/acknowledgement that keeps people working, liveshows that build personal connections more than anything - they benefit from doing that, of course, but that doesn't negate it from existance in my view.
"We are opposites" might be a good way to summarize all this, alas, yeah, agree to disagree, and I can't believe I woke up at 4 am and felt the need to type this out, I might be due an IDB break to like, sort my priorities.
Catallena wrote:I'm not really keeping D&P or any vlogger in mind rn, it's far bigger than any of that and I hope everyone realized that. This isn't about swearing and kid friendly personas. The only thing that matters in this is Google actively murdering freedom of speech on the internet. They're trying to control information about current events and that's really dangerous. News and opinion channels like DeFranco's are now only allowed to exist if they don't make money. I wonder if any other social media platforms will respond to this. Facebook has been trying to establish it's video features, but they're just as evil as Google. And Twitter is a mess. So we're all fucked basically. Great. Love that Google knows everything about me.
Of course it's bigger, and you're not saying anything the video itself doesn't already, relating it to D&P on a D&P forum doesn't serve to dismiss that? But boy, I'm not the most positive person in the world, but next to you, I feel like one.
